A good résumé is crucial to your success and is, in fact, your personal advertisement. In today’s competitive job market, it is your most valuable marketing tool and has to sell you to prospective employers and lead you to an interview! The following advice may help you reach the interview stage in your job search.
Often the easiest way to make your first contact with an employer is to hand deliver (if you can) or mail out your Résumé together with a covering letter. It is advisable to prepare a cover letter with your Résumé as this letter serves to:
Introduce the Résumé
Highlight your experience, strengths and proven abilities, as outlined in the Résumé
Create a favourable impression on the employer
Obtain an interview with the employer.
The letter must mention the attached Résumé, your present job or area of activity, field of interest, training and experience, knowledge of the company, and the job desired. It should also emphasize that you are available for interview with the employer.
Whenever possible, the letter should be addressed to the person dealing with employment applications. You may have to contact the employer beforehand to ask of the person's name and correct title. In most instances when replying to advertised positions, a full name, address and, if required, identifying elements such as Competition, Posting and Job numbers, are given.
There are many benefits to be obtained from writing a covering letter. If you decide to send a covering letter with your Résumé, I shall be pleased to assist you with its composition either at the time of preparing your Résumé or at a later date.
